C.S. Lewis (1898–1963) was a British writer, scholar, and Christian apologist, renowned for his works of fiction, theology, and philosophy. Best known for his Chronicles of Narnia series, Lewis was a master storyteller who captivated readers of all ages with his imaginative worlds, profound themes, and timeless insights.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Lewis developed an early love for literature and classical studies. After serving in World War I, he went on to study at Oxford University, where he later became a fellow and tutor in English literature. His academic career was distinguished, with a focus on medieval and Renaissance literature, but it was his literary works that brought him widespread recognition.
Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series, which began with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950), is considered one of the most beloved children's book series of all time. Set in the magical land of Narnia, the books are known for their blend of adventure, allegory, and moral lessons, exploring themes of good vs. evil, sacrifice, and redemption.
Beyond fiction, Lewis was an influential Christian thinker, publishing numerous books on theology and apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and The Problem of Pain. His writings on faith and reason have inspired generations of believers and seekers alike, making him one of the most important Christian voices of the 20th century.
A prolific writer, C.S. Lewis’s works continue to shape both literature and religious thought. His unique ability to blend the intellectual with the imaginative makes him a towering figure in both the literary and Christian worlds.
Stepson of C.S. Lewis, co-producer and executive producer of the Chronicles of Narnia film series, Gresham has played a pivotal role in bringing the beloved Narnia books to the big screen. His involvement in the films, which began with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), has helped ensure that the cinematic adaptations stay true to the spirit and themes of Lewis’s original works.
Gresham’s personal story was notably portrayed in the 1993 film Shadowlands, starring Anthony Hopkins as C.S. Lewis and Debra Winger as Joy Davidman (Gresham's mother.) The film brings to light the depth of Gresham’s grief and the lasting impact of his experiences with both Lewis and his mother, offering a poignant glimpse into his personal life.
Gresham’s passion for C.S. Lewis’s writings has also extended to his involvement in the C.S. Lewis Estate. As one of the estate's key trustees, he has helped manage and safeguard the literary works and intellectual property of Lewis, ensuring that they continue to inspire and reach audiences worldwide. His efforts have been instrumental in preserving the legacy of one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.
Today, Douglas Gresham continues to be a prominent voice in the world of literature, film, and Christian apologetics, working to ensure that the stories and teachings of C.S. Lewis continue to resonate with readers, viewers, and believers across the globe.
